Apprehension hung thick in the air.
The young men sat quiet in fear of the dawn
And the fate that awaited them there.

"Why the long faces?" the Veteran said
As he stepped in the dim fire light.
"I've seen many days, many wars, many graves
So I'll give you a tip for this night."

Raise your ale to the god of war
Raise your horn on high
Fear not the rays of the coming sun
My friends, we all must die!

"But we fear for our lives and we fear for our friends,
Our comrades and brothers in arms.
So short is the time we have spent on this earth,
Our sorrow'd be great with them gone."

He said, "The earth I have spilled o're companions and friends
Could rival a mountain in height.
But I'll fear not the day, raise a drink to their name,
I shall see them again when I die!"
